The empty Tuesday: how to fill gap nights in your Lombok villa

Most villa calendars in Lombok have the same small hole in them: a night or two left over between one booking and the next. A family checks out on Monday, friends arrive on Thursday. Tuesday and Wednesday sit empty.

These are called gap nights. Usually they're caused by booking settings rather than a lack of demand, so they're one of the easiest things to fix.

What is a gap night?

A gap night is an unbooked night between one guest's check-out and the next guest's check-in. AirDNA, a short-term rental data company, describes them as the "nights left open between one guest's checkout and the next guest's check-in". A single empty night between two stays is often called an orphan night.

Why do gap nights happen?

The most common cause is a minimum stay that's longer than the gap. If your villa has a three-night minimum, a two-night gap can never be booked, however much demand there is. PriceLabs, a pricing tool used by short-term rental hosts, points out that these gaps are usually "caused by your own settings, which is why it is fixable". Fixed check-in days and late cancellations can strand nights in the same way.

How do you fill a gap night?

  • Lower the minimum stay for just those dates. A two-night gap with a one- or two-night minimum becomes bookable straight away. You don't need to change your minimum stay for the rest of the calendar.
  • Adjust the rate a little, not a lot. A modest weekday rate is usually enough. Gap nights rarely need a big discount.
  • Make sure the price covers your turnover. AirDNA warns that a discounted single night can lose money once cleaning and laundry are paid for. Two-night gaps usually cover it.
  • Offer it to the guests on either side. An extra night or a late check-out for the guest leaving on Monday can fill the gap without a new booking.

Gap nights rarely need a big discount. They need a minimum stay that fits.

Who books gap nights in Lombok?

It depends how far ahead the gap appears. Gap nights show up as soon as two bookings are made with a short space between them, sometimes months in advance.

Gaps that appear early can be booked by travellers planning short trips: Indonesians planning a quick domestic getaway, or visitors adding two nights in Lombok to a longer Bali holiday. In Agoda's 2026 travel outlook, 32% of Indonesian travellers said they planned 11 or more trips in 2026. More than half (57%) planned to travel more domestically than internationally. For these gaps, lowering the minimum stay is often enough, with no discount needed. PriceLabs notes that dates further out "have time to fill without a discount".

Gaps that are still open close to the date suit people already in Indonesia who can travel at short notice. Lombok is about 40 minutes by plane from Bali, or around two and a half hours by fast boat (The Lombok Lodge), so travellers in Bali, on the Gili Islands or elsewhere in the country can decide on a short stay within a day or two. This is when a modest rate adjustment makes sense. AirDNA suggests keeping gap discounts to dates within about 45 days of check-in.

How much are gap nights worth?

As an example, if two gap nights a month are filled, that's 24 extra nights a year. At IDR 2 million a night, that's about IDR 48 million that would otherwise earn nothing. AirDNA found that hosts who adjust their prices and minimum stays book about two more nights a month than hosts with fixed settings (based on US data).

The takeaway

Not every empty night has the same cause. Sometimes it's simply a quiet week or low season and no setting will change that. But when the nights around a gap are booked and the gap itself isn't, it's usually your minimum stay or calendar rules standing in the way. Checking for gaps each week and loosening the rules for those dates is one of the simplest habits in villa booking management.
